"I have a little theory that I'd like to air here, if I may. What is it that you think makes you magicians?" More silence. Fogg was well into rhetorical-question territory now anyway. He spoke more softly.

"Is it because you are intelligent? Is it because you are brave and good? Is is because you're special? Maybe. Who knows. But I'll tell you something: I think you're magicians because you're unhappy. A magician is strong because he feels pain. He feels the difference between what the world is and what he would make of it. Or what did you think that stuff in your chest was? A magician is strong because he hurts more than others. His wound is his strength. Most people carry that pain around inside them their whole lives, until they kill the pain by other means, or until it kills them. But you, my friends, you found another way: a way to use the pain. To burn it as fuel, for light and warmth. You have learned to break the world that has tried to break you."

One thing I would love for doctors to understand is that by the time a patient has been chronically ill for a number of years, they likely have many layers of medical trauma. This can affect the way they come across in an appointment. — Sleepy Amy (@amy_is_tired) August 25, 2022ALT
When my symptoms first started, I would be visibly distressed in doctors' appts when discussing them. I'm not anymore. Not because I'm not distressed (if anything, I'm more so) but because my understandable distress was pathologised and used as 'proof' I was just mentally ill. — Sleepy Amy (@amy_is_tired) August 25, 2022ALT
So over the years I've become more businesslike in appts, to the point where my distress about my quality of life is so far from my mind that I can't even recall it when I'm talking to a doctor, never mind cry or anything. It's a trauma induced coping mechanism. — Sleepy Amy (@amy_is_tired) August 25, 2022ALT
But this could have its own consequences. Doctors might assume my symptoms aren't that bad. Or my quality of life isn't as poor as I say it is. I worry that this influences their decisions just as much as my obvious distress did in the beginning. We need trauma informed care. — Sleepy Amy (@amy_is_tired) August 25, 2022ALT
I'm sad that this resonates with so many people. Your stories are heartbreaking and all too relatable. Solidarity 💜 — Sleepy Amy (@amy_is_tired) August 26, 2022ALT

I tend to only cry for two reasons in doctors appts now a days.

1 - a doctor actually believing in me and treating me kindly. It’s so shocking that I can’t help it. It’s taken me four appointments with my trauma informed primary care doctor to not cry.

2 - I’m so frustrated and I know I’m about to call it and get up and leave. The last appt that I did that at was the allergist who literally said that everything to know about the human body has already been discovered and any ‘new’ illnesses were just for attention (when talking about mast cell disorders).

yesterday roommate’s nurse from her hospital at home program (she’s recovering from sepsis) said that she just had the most remarkable ability to find humor and happiness in any situation and i had to leave the room because this, all of this is why
